about

After releasing a string of upbeat singles, singer-songwriter Pina Palau is finally slowing down, but just a pinch. Her latest release is the dreamy ballad titled Super Ego. The song was written from the perspective of a dream (quite literally) and sounds like it, too. As listeners, we bear witness to the moment in which waking consciousness infiltrates the cozy, insular bubble of slumber. Reality seeps in gently (at first), dressed up in fuzzy, warm colors. The sound of the Velvet Underground wafts in like the scent of freshly brewed coffee. It’s all just a notch short of persuasive. And then, suddenly, the super ego kicks in! It goes from zero to a hundred at a drop of a dime; and proceeds to methodically hit all the right combinations to get the protagonist out of bed. We’ve all been there! For some of us, it’s a daily battle.

The track is based around the soft plucking of the acoustic guitar. Sparkling piano notes are sprinkled throughout; the whole thing is padded with airy strings and a cooing trombone. It feels like a deep, warm embrace. Pina recalls the session: “It rained a lot that day, and the sound of the raindrops hitting the leaves of the reed tree outside of the studio window was so beautiful. So, we opened the window and placed a microphone right in front of it. I was sitting there with this huge acoustic guitar in my lap, playing the song to accompany the rain. It was the perfect setting for this piece.”

Super Ego is the 4th single from Pina Palau’s upcoming debut titled Illusion. The record will be released later on this year. It was produced together with Mario Hänni (Mnevis and ex-drummer of Sophie Hunger and Pablo Nouvelle) and could be described as a winding journey through a rich gradient of indie folk.

lyrics

You come into my room and you stand by my bed
I can feel you breathing right next to my head
It tickles when you whisper into my ears
But your words they sound deeply severe

Who let you in
Who let you in
Can’t you see that I’m still sleeping

You leave the room with an unpleasant sound
Then my tired eyes make me roll around
I can smell a trace of velvet in the air
And I know that you’re not mean no you really care

Who let you in
Who let you in
Can’t you see that I’m still dreaming

I sit down at the table you stare into my face
You keep coming closer I don’t have enough space
I can’t have you breathing down my neck all the time
This is not only your life no it’s also mine

Who let you in
Who let you in
Can’t you see that I’m still sleeping

Who let you in
Who let you in
Can’t you see that I’m still dreaming

about

Pina Palau Zürich, Switzerland

We live in an enchanted world, unfortunately way too often we’re too busy to even notice. It takes a special type of artist to draw back the curtain and make us recognise this magic nestled in the mundane. Singer-songwriter Pina Palau possesses this rare gift. Her songs obsess over the everyday: coaxing the poetry out of situations and characters that seem all too familiar. ... more
